"A Lesson in Living History "
Submitted by: Dynita Padgett
Project Overview:
This will be a lesson in Living History with students creating a digital story about Barack Obama being the first African American President.
Learning Environment:
This project is done by a group of third –fifth grade students in a public inner city school in Northwest Florida. It is a Saturday program funded by a Non-profit organization, Village Hope of Pensacola, Inc. The Saturday program fosters 21st Century learning. The teacher of this group of students utilizes strategies for creating a rich and engaging learning environment. The goal is to promote quality teaching that accelerates learning, eliminates classroom management problems, and reaches every student, every session.
Model: Digital Storytelling
Digital Storytelling is the practice of using computer-based tools to tell stories. As with traditional storytelling, most digital stories focus on a specific topic and contain a particular point of view. However, as the name implies, digital stories usually contain some mixture of computer-based images, text, recorded audio narration, video clips and/or music. Digital stories can vary in length, but most of the stories used in education typically last between two and ten minutes. And the topics that are used in Digital Storytelling range from personal tales to the recounting of historical events, from exploring life in one's own community to the search for life in other corners of the universe, and literally, everything in between.
Objective:
The purpose of this project is to have students apply researching, reading and writing skills to research about President elect Barack Obama and compose a digital story about him being the first African American President.
Learning Goals:
I chose this model because of the educational goals and benefits of using digital storytelling with students.
The learners will gain a/an
· Enduring Understanding — by telling the story of what they know and understand for others, authors deepen their own self-meaning of the topic
· Effective Communication — reading and writing information beyond words
· Multiple Intelligences and Learning Styles — addressing not only the opportunity for students to use their preferred mode of learning and thinking, but also enabling them to practice the effective use of all modalities
· Teaming and Collaboration — growing skills through practiced opportunities to co-produce group projects
The learners will use different media, techniques, and processes to communicate ideas, feelings, and stories about President elect Barack Obama.
The learners will use language to express individual perspectives through analysis of personal, social, cultural, and historical issues.
The learners will narrate a personal account which:
creates a coherent, organizing structure appropriate to purpose, audience, and context.
establishes a point of view and sharpens focus.
uses remembered feelings.
selects details that best illuminate the topic.
connects events to self/society.
The learners will use multiple sources of print and non-print information to explore and create research products in both written and presentational forms by:
determining purpose, audience, and context.
understanding the focus.
evaluating information for extraneous detail, inconsistencies, relevant facts, and organization.
researching and organizing information to achieve purpose.
using notes and/or memory aids to structure information.
supporting ideas with examples
noting and/or citing sources used.

Sample Digital Story created by me...
This is a sample digital story that I created. This is a sample of how the students project may look. I used Window Movie Maker to create this digital story . Also, I used AVEX i-phone video converter to convert this video to MPEG4.
The students would work in groups of 3-4 to create a digital story about Barack Obama. They would storyboard and have a rubric to refer to for expectations.
I uploaded this video to my youtube account so that it could be displayed on this site. The file was too big to upload from my computer. These are issues that you may encounter when you are trying to display students work for all to see.
I hope you enjoy. You will even hear my one year old nephew give his point of view about Barack Obama. Please leave comments. This is the URL for this video, just in case you can't view it from this page. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WzgrSmmRq7w. The title is a Lesson in Living History.
